FIRE DEPARTMENT

The City of Chewelah Volunteer Fire Department is probably one of the most popular groups to belong to.   It's hard to find anyone in Chewelah that hasn't either served as a volunteer or knows someone that has.    The fire department has been around since Chewelah was incorporated.   However, it wasn't until 1936 that the Volunteer Fire Department became official in order to be in compliance with insurance regulations.    Today's department has a membership of up to 35 volunteers.   These volunteers meet at least once a month to discuss business and continue their training.    They are currently led by Fire Chief Doug Sassman and Assistant Chief Kim Allen.  Other officers include Captains James Gray and David Riske, Secretary Duane Reese, Training Officer Larry Peterson and Safety Officer Paul Sety.   Besides protecting the City of Chewelah they also assist in fire fighting throughout the state.

BURN BAN

Since 2007 the State of Washington Department of Ecology has imposed a Burn Ban in all urban growth areas.    "Urban growth area" is a term used by cities and counties to define where home and business develepment is allowed.   The entire City of Chewelah is an Urban Growth Area.  This includes the portion of Chewelah that is in the golf course area.    Citizens are not allowed to burn household yard waste, such as leaves, grass, brush and other yard trimmings.   If you see someone burnning, you may contact the Department of Ecology at 1-866-211-6284.

A REMINDER:  It is illegal to burn garbage in a barrel in the State of Washington.   If caught, you can be fined up $10,000 per violation day.
